Valiente Law’s Free Florida Speedy Trial Calculator
We built a Florida speedy trial calculator for use on our own case files. It turned out to be useful enough that we put it on the site for anyone to use — free, no email required: valientelaw.com/calculator
What it does
Two things:
Speedy trial deadline. Choose felony or misdemeanor, enter the date the information or charging document was filed, and it returns the date the speedy trial period runs out.
Notice of Expiration. Enter the date the notice was filed, and it returns the hearing and recapture dates that follow.
It runs on Rule 3.191 as amended effective July 1, 2025, and it accounts for weekends and Eleventh Judicial Circuit court holidays for 2026 and 2027 — the Miami-Dade calendar most of our State cases run on.
Why the 2025 amendment matters
Speedy trial used to run from the date of arrest. It doesn’t anymore. Under the amended rule, the clock starts when the State files formal charges — an information or indictment. The recapture period after a Notice of Expiration also increased from 10 days to 30 days.
Much of what’s still published online about Florida speedy trial was written under the old rule. Counting from an arrest date will produce an incorrect number, usually by weeks.
What it can’t do
It counts days. It doesn’t know a particular case. Tolling, continuances, waivers, demands, defendant unavailability, and case-specific court orders all move these dates, and none of that is in the tool. Cases initiated before July 1, 2025, are subject to the prior version of the rule. Every date should be verified against the current rule text and Rule 3.040 on computation of time.
